The Fatshimetrie university union recently expressed its displeasure over the failure of the state government to fulfill its commitments. Members of the union, led by President Sa’id and Secretary Gwarzo, jointly signed an incisive declaration last Thursday in Kano.
The union’s demands fall into three major parts. First of all, they demand an improvement in the conditions of service of their members. Then, they call for sustainable financial support to promote the growth of the university, as well as the strengthening and preservation of university autonomy and academic freedom.
The union members found it necessary to bring their demands to public attention, after months of failed attempts to get satisfaction from the state government.
Regarding the conditions of service, the union is demanding immediate payment of the outstanding Academic Allowance Arrears (EAA), totaling N178 million. While an agreement had been reached with the state government for payment in four installments starting from April 2024, the first installment has still not been made to date.
The union is also demanding payment of Consequential Adjustment Arrears, amounting to N111 million. In addition, it requests the implementation of the new Consolidated Academic Salary Structure of Universities II (CONUASS II), set for January 1, 2023 as the date of entry into force.
On university funding, the union is calling on the state government to accelerate ongoing projects and supplement TETFUND funding for academic staff training. Finally, on university autonomy and academic freedom, the union calls for the reconstitution of the university board of directors, highlighting its strategic role and the impact of its absence on university administration in accordance with the law.
The Fatshimetrie union’s fight for fair working conditions and the development of the university is an important reminder of the importance of supporting academic staff in their essential role for the future of education and research.
