After months of joint operations, the Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC), Lieutenant General Christian Tshiwewe, and his counterpart from the Ugandan army, have drawn up a positive assessment of operation “Shujaa” against ADF rebels in the Beni region, located in North Kivu, as well as part of Ituri. This strategic collaboration between the two armed forces has enabled significant progress in the fight against rebel groups operating in the region, notably the ADF.
During a meeting held at the Kasindi-Lubiriha border post, the two military officers highlighted the successes achieved, including the neutralization, capture and surrender of numerous ADF leaders and combatants during the operation launched in November 2021. These actions also allowed the release of several hostages and the reintegration of certain ADF rebels after a process of demobilization and deradicalization.
In addition to these tangible results, the Chief of General Staff of the FARDC and his Ugandan counterpart agreed to mobilize additional financial resources to strengthen ongoing operations against the ADF and restore peace in the Beni region, as well as in a part of the territories of Irumu and Mambasa in Ituri. This approach demonstrates the commitment of the two armies to ensuring security and stability in this strategic area.
This high-level meeting is part of the continuity of efforts made by the Congolese and Ugandan armed forces to eradicate the threat of armed groups in the region. It echoes other recent initiatives, such as the meeting between the Deputy Chief of General Staff of the FARDC and the Commander of the Land Forces of the Ugandan Army, highlighting coordination and cooperation between the two armies.
At the same time, the Sokola 1 operations spokesperson spoke of new strategies put in place to overcome persistent challenges in tracking down ADF rebels and strengthen security in the region. These initiatives demonstrate the determination of the Congolese and Ugandan armed forces to guarantee the security of local populations and to establish a lasting climate of peace in these areas affected by insecurity.
In conclusion, Operation “Shujaa” and the collaboration between the FARDC and the UPDF represent a significant step forward in the fight against insecurity and rebel groups in the DRC. This military cooperation demonstrates the desire of the two countries to work hand in hand to ensure stability and security in the Great Lakes region.
