The curse of opportunistic constitutional revisions in Africa

For decades, Africa has been the scene of a worrying trend: opportunistic constitutional revisions during the last presidential term. This practice, often justified in the name of progress or stability, raises serious questions about democracy and the commitment of leaders to respect the fundamental principles of governance.

As presidents begin their final terms, a frenzy of constitutional revision frequently grips the continent, driven by an insatiable thirst for power and the desire to unduly extend their political influence. These revisions, often hasty and controversial, erode the foundations of democracy and undermine the people’s confidence in their leaders.

Rather than consolidating democratic progress, these revisions often serve the personal interests of existing leaders, favor an excessive concentration of power and weaken the balance of power. Ultimately, it is democracy that suffers, institutions that weaken and popular will that is flouted.

It is essential that African leaders understand the importance of respecting the limits set by the Constitution, promoting transparency and ensuring a peaceful and democratic political transition. Africa deserves leaders dedicated to the well-being of their fellow citizens, and not obsessed with retaining power at all costs.

By ending the curse of opportunistic constitutional revisions, Africa can finally begin a new chapter, one characterized by more accountable governance, stronger institutions and a truly promising democratic future. It is time to break this harmful cycle and usher in an era of authentic leadership, respectful of democratic principles and truly focused on the well-being of citizens.
