**Managing Climate Emergencies in 2024: A Call for Early Action**

In this new year, alarming climate forecasts call for preventive and proactive action to mitigate the effects of natural disasters. At the recent National Emergency Coordination Forum in Abuja, lively discussions highlighted the crucial importance of early warning supported by anticipatory actions to minimize the impact of disasters.

The mandate of the Nigeria Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) encompasses the coordination of emergency preparedness, mitigation and response activities across the country. Joint efforts of the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) have identified areas at high risk of flooding in several states and local areas between April and November.

Meteorological and hydrological predictions for the year 2024 highlight particularly vulnerable regions. During the first three months, 25 states and 72 local areas are identified as high risk, with vulnerability continuing through September, affecting 33 states and 135 local areas. October and November are not immune, with 19 states and 44 local areas listed as regions to watch closely.

In response to these worrying predictions, NEMA convened a group of experts to analyze the implications of disaster management and develop a climate disaster preparedness and mitigation strategy for 2024. Preventative measures such as community awareness , clearing of waterways, monitoring of dam spills and relocation of at-risk communities were recommended.

The appeal is made to all stakeholders concerned to take these recommendations seriously in order to limit the loss of human lives and material property. The need for regular coordination meetings between different emergency sectors is highlighted for an effective response to climate crises. Communicating these messages at local levels is also essential for appropriate action.

In a year marked by unprecedented climate challenges, the call to action is loud and clear. It is up to each of us to work together, respond promptly and put preventive measures in place to protect our communities from the ravages of natural disasters. Now is the time for early warning, careful preparation and solidarity in the face of climate adversity.
