Hunting M23 rebels: SADC and FARDC united for peace and security

Joint operations led by SADC (SAMIDRC), in collaboration with the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC), have been launched to hunt down M23 rebels with the aim of maintaining peace and security in the region. These actions aim to secure the environment and protect civilians and their property against any imminent threat or attack.

According to a press release issued by the force from southern African countries on May 5, 2024, these operations specifically aim to ensure access to the supply routes of the city of Goma, while guaranteeing the protection of civilians against any form intimidation, forced displacement or violence, allowing them to lead normal lives without fear or interference.

SAMIDRC is committed to scrupulously respecting human rights, in accordance with the principles set out in the laws governing armed conflict, international human rights law, the Charter of the United Nations, international humanitarian law and laws of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Furthermore, the SADC force promised to continue to cooperate with all parties involved in order to improve the humanitarian and security situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Expressing its condolences to the Congolese government and the families of the victims of the recent attacks which caused the loss of 16 civilians and injured around thirty people during the bombing of displaced persons camps, the SAMIDRC strongly condemns these inhumane acts which have sowed terror in the region.

These joint operations aim to restore peace and stability in the region troubled by the actions of the M23 rebels, underlining the firm commitment of the armed forces to protect the civilian population and to put an end to all forms of violence and terrorism hindering the development and security of the local population.
