“The traditional leaders of the DRC are demanding a dedicated ministry to defend their prerogatives”

The traditional leaders of the Democratic Republic of Congo recently expressed their wish to obtain a specific ministry according to their prerogatives. During an audience granted by the Head of State in Kinshasa, traditional authorities requested the creation of a ministry dedicated to traditional leaders, independently of the Ministry of the Interior. Armand Ibanda, customary chief of Grand Bandundu, stressed the importance of this request to better defend the interests and rights of customary chiefs.

Regarding security, traditional authorities have also supported the president’s efforts to restore peace, particularly in volatile parts of the country. Mwami Kabare from Grand Kivu encouraged the head of state to continue his efforts to guarantee peace in the East and throughout the country.

The security situation in Kwamouth, Kwango province, was also discussed during the meeting. Traditional leaders proposed solutions to the president, emphasizing the importance of preserving indigenous lands.

As a sign of recognition, the traditional leaders offered gifts to the President of the Republic and congratulated him on his re-election. They also expressed gratitude for his commitment to customary authority.

This request from traditional leaders for the creation of a specific ministry reflects their desire to strengthen their role and influence within the Congolese government. By giving more importance to the concerns of traditional authorities, the government could contribute to better management of customary affairs and closer collaboration with local communities.
