The blatant injustice that persists within the justice system of the Democratic Republic of Congo continues to make waves and spark outrage. Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo, Metropolitan Archbishop of Kinshasa, recently denounced the dysfunction of Congolese justice during the funeral of the opponent Chérubin Okende, whose suspicious death was attributed to an alleged suicide by the judicial authorities.

Despite the disputed conclusions of the Attorney General according to which Chérubin Okende committed suicide, many voices, including that of the family of the deceased, support the theory of assassination. Cardinal Ambongo vigorously denounced this conclusion, stressing that the case in question testifies to the lamentable state of Congolese justice.

At the funeral, the Okende family expressed their refusal to remain silent despite pressure and lack of financial support from the government. They demand justice and truth for Chérubin, calling his death a state crime.

Several prominent political figures also expressed solidarity at the funeral, emphasizing unity in the quest for justice.

This case highlights the shortcomings and flaws of the Congolese judicial system, thus reinforcing the call for profound and urgent reforms to ensure the independence, integrity and efficiency of the judicial system in the DRC.

Finally, it is imperative that light be shed on this matter and that justice be done for Chérubin Okende, while respecting the fundamental principles of fairness, transparency and accountability.
