Faced with recent accusations of arbitrary arrests and torture perpetrated by security agents at the Pangi roadblocks, in Maniema province, indignation is palpable. The NGO “Acting for the reconstruction of our space and conviviality” (AGIREC) Maniema vigorously denounces these actions and points out the inaction of the provincial authorities.
The inhabitants of these regions face a double punishment: the soaring prices of basic goods and foodstuffs, as well as the constant harassment orchestrated by the security forces. A recent incident has left its mark: a legal guardian was arrested without valid reason, suffering ill-treatment to the point of being seriously injured. His emergency hospitalization reveals the seriousness of the facts, giving a glimpse of the extent of the abuse committed.
Despite efforts to alert the competent military authorities, no concrete response was obtained, leaving the population with a feeling of abandonment and blatant injustice. These practices unworthy of the rule of law must stop, and rapid action is expected to prevent further violations of the fundamental rights of the citizens of Pangi.
It is essential that light is shed on these reprehensible actions and that concrete measures are taken to guarantee security and respect for the rights of all. The people of Pangi deserve to be protected and respected, and it is imperative that the authorities take their responsibilities to put an end to this unacceptable situation.
