2024-03-28

The DRC’s permanent representative to the UN, Zénon Mukongo, recently launched an urgent appeal to the Security Council to put an end to the impunity reigning in Rwanda. He calls for the application of severe sanctions to counter the country’s “criminal awakening”.

In a passionate speech, Ambassador Mukongo stressed the importance of not allowing the RDF-M23 coalition to continue to exploit the DRC’s strategic resources, under the cover of superficial agreements. He emphasizes the need to prevent insecurity and conflicts that keep millions of people displaced within the country.

The priority of the Congolese government is the return of displaced people and the reconstruction of areas affected by conflicts. Support from the international community and donors is crucial to meeting the urgent humanitarian needs in the DRC, as highlighted by the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General, Bintou Keita, during the same meeting.

The situation in the DRC is alarming, with more than 7.1 million people displaced across the country, according to OCHA figures. It is imperative to find lasting solutions to end this humanitarian crisis and ensure a more stable future for the Congolese population.
