Crucial Maintenance: Securing Water Supply to the Lesotho Highlands Water Project

The Lesotho Highlands Water Project tunnel requires essential preventive maintenance to ensure a stable water supply for Rand Water and other municipalities. The upcoming six-month shutdown of the tunnel is carefully planned to avoid disruptions to water services in Gauteng and neighboring provinces.

This maintenance is crucial for the integrity of the tunnels transferring 780 million cubic meters of water annually to the Integrated Vaal River System. Planned maintenance includes sandblasting the steel-lined section, renewing corrosion protection, and addressing repair needs identified during the 2019 shutdown.

The closure of the tunnel will reduce the annual water transfer to 700 million cubic meters in 2024, with plans to increase transfers post-closure to compensate for the deficit. Despite this, the closure is expected to have no impact on water supply thanks to full reservoirs in the Integrated Vaal River System.

This proactive approach to maintenance ensures the long-term sustainability of the project and guarantees uninterrupted water supply to the region. The commitment to preserving and enhancing water infrastructure highlights the dedication to serving the population’s water needs effectively.
