The digital world can sometimes reveal dark and macabre aspects of human nature. A tragic event recently revealed by Egyptian prosecutors highlights how organized crime can exploit emerging technologies to commit heinous acts. The harrowing story of an Egyptian teenager named Ahmed, who was brutally murdered and stripped of his organs by a criminal gang operating through the dark web, raises disturbing questions about the morality of some individuals and the flaws potential of digital networks.
Ahmed, only 15 years old, lived in Ezbet Othman, in the Shubra al-Kheima region, Qalyoubiya governorate. His life was cut short in unimaginable ways by unscrupulous criminals who planned to sell footage of the crime for a huge sum of money. The murder was broadcast live online, with the gruesome extraction of the victim’s organs, the atrocities then being sold on the “dark web”.
The details of this crime are unbearably cruel. The killer confessed that the crime was ordered by an Egyptian citizen residing in Kuwait, who was deported to Egypt and arrested. He confirmed that the aim of the crime was to sell the video and distribute it online to obtain considerable sums of money.
The perpetrator explained that the sponsor asked him to choose a victim to kill and whose organs to remove in exchange for five million Egyptian pounds. After identifying the victim, the killer introduced her to the sponsor via video call. The latter told him that he would be informed of the next step after committing the murder. However, after complying, he was ordered to find another victim before obtaining the agreed sum. Fortunately, the murderer was apprehended before another life was taken.
The horror of the situation was further amplified when the Prosecutor’s Office discovered the victim’s body, his organs having been removed and placed in a bag next to him. However, no traces of medical equipment were found during the inspection, suggesting that this extraction was not the result of professional organ trafficking.
This sinister event forces us to think about how new technologies can be perverted by criminals to commit unspeakable acts. It also highlights the importance of strengthening online surveillance and security to prevent such atrocious crimes in the future. Ahmed should have grown up in complete safety, surrounded by his family and loved ones, but he was a victim of the barbarity of individuals without conscience or compassion. We must remain vigilant and united in the face of such atrocities, to ensure the safety and well-being of our communities.
