The blue economy: an opportunity for sustainable development for the Democratic Republic of Congo

The concept of the blue economy has emerged as a focal point for development stakeholders in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Recently, a stakeholder consultative workshop seminar was held in Kinshasa to outline priority areas for the DRC’s national blue economy strategy, igniting enthusiasm and fostering new prospects for the country.

Over the course of three days, participants delved into the five fundamental pillars of the blue economy that will drive socio-economic activities along the Congo River, its tributaries, lakes, and rivers. These pillars encompass the fishing industry, shipping, tourism, crafts, and commercial activities linked to this flourishing sector.

Pascaline Mbangu, the Secretary General at the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, emphasized the urgency of addressing the lag in promoting the blue economy in the DRC. Collaborating with the Inter-African Animal Resources Bureau of the African Union underscores the nation’s dedication to seizing the opportunities inherent in this nascent and sustainable economic model.

The blue economy presents significant potential for the DRC, given its vast untapped marine and river resources. By leveraging these assets and implementing a robust, coordinated national strategy, the country stands to create employment, generate revenue, and foster the sustainable and equitable development of its resources.

The conclusion of this consultative seminar signifies the dawn of a new chapter for the blue economy in the DRC. Armed with the insights and guidelines established during these meetings, the country is poised to confront challenges and capitalize on the opportunities presented by this burgeoning sector.

Beyond driving economic growth, the blue economy acts as a catalyst for sustainable and inclusive development in the DRC. Through responsible and sustainable exploitation of its marine and river resources, the country can contribute to a narrative of progress and prosperity, benefiting future generations.
