Land reform in Ituri: A new initiative to prevent conflicts and promote development

The Ituri provincial government has launched awareness projects to reform the land law and develop a provincial strategy for managing land. These initiatives, initiated in collaboration with the UCBC of Beni and provincial authorities, aim to prevent land conflicts that have been a significant source of tension in Ituri, especially since 2017 due to insecurity issues. The awareness-raising efforts target specific land issues in the region, with the goal of guiding interventions through appropriate policies and strategies.

Serge Vutega, from the UCBC Natural Resources center, highlights the importance of establishing dedicated public policies to address legal and institutional challenges related to land management in Ituri. Aimé Lobi, the governor’s advisor on land matters, emphasizes the need to reframe stakeholders’ understanding of land to mitigate conflict consequences and ensure that land becomes a catalyst for development rather than impoverishment.

The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) is providing financial support to this initiative, demonstrating a commitment to stabilizing the region. The collaboration between provincial authorities, UCBC, and UNDP offers hope for resolving land issues in Ituri and fostering harmonious regional development.
