Fatshimetrie: the decision of the CENI to postpone the elections in five provinces of the DRC shakes up the country

The postponement of the elections of governors and senators in five provinces of the Democratic Republic of Congo by the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) has sparked significant reactions among the Congolese population. Postponing these elections in vital provinces like North Kivu, Ituri, North Ubangi, Kwilu, and Equateur has raised concerns about the political stability in these regions.

During the program Dialogue entre Congolais (DEC) on Radio Okapi, the director of operations of the CENI, Jason Senda, provided reasons for the delay. The continued state of siege in North Kivu and Ituri, as well as the presence of M23 rebels in certain areas, were cited as primary causes.

Disruptions during legislative elections in Yakoma and Masimanimba also led to the cancellation of polls in North Ubangi and Kwilu. This complex situation underlines the challenges facing the DRC in conducting free and transparent elections.

While Ecuador has been authorized to resume electoral activities post the lifting of suspension on the provincial assembly, the overall status of the elections of governors and senators in the DRC remains uncertain.

This decision by the CENI once again underlines the fragility of the democratic process in the DRC and depicts the persistent challenges in consolidating its institutions to ensure citizen involvement in the country’s political affairs.

It is crucial to closely monitor the unfolding situation and uphold democratic principles in the electoral process within the DRC.
