The Biennale of Contemporary African Art: Between postponement and resilience, the major cultural event.

The 15th edition of the Biennale of Contemporary African Art, a highly anticipated cultural event, faced a setback this year as it was postponed from its original May 16 opening in Dakar to a new date from November 7 to December 7. This decision, made due to financial constraints, disappointed the artistic community and regular attendees of this renowned event.

The postponement was necessary to ensure optimal conditions for this international event and maintain the Biennale’s historic reputation. However, it was a significant blow to an event that had only been postponed once before, during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Financial and budgetary constraints, specifically the lack of expected payments from the previous administration, led to this postponement. With only a third of the planned budget available, the organizers faced challenges in preparing for the event, including transporting works to Dakar and creating the event catalog.

Despite these obstacles, some Dakar art galleries are continuing their programming for the off festival, supported by private funds. Their dedication to the artistic community and the public demonstrates resilience and determination in the face of adversity.

Although the postponement disrupted the original calendar, the Biennale remains a significant event in the international cultural landscape. This situation underscores the challenges faced by large-scale cultural events and emphasizes the need for financial and institutional support to ensure the sustainability of such artistic endeavors. With hope for the successful realization of this postponed edition, the celebration of contemporary African art and the strengthening of bonds between artists, galleries, and art enthusiasts remain the priority.
