IMF welcomes DRC’s economic progress under three-year agreement

During the recent Annual Meetings of the IMF and the World Bank in Washington, focus was on the IMF’s recent involvement in sub-Saharan Africa, notably in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Mr. Abebe Aemro Selassie, the Director of the IMF Africa Department, shared insights with the press on the DRC’s economic reforms and progress under the three-year agreement initiated in 2021.

The IMF’s nod of approval for the DRC’s management reflects the country’s dedication to meeting the program’s requisites. Director Aemro Selassie commended the Congolese government for implementing economic reforms to uphold macroeconomic stability despite ongoing challenges, especially linked to conflicts in the eastern region.

The substantial three-year US$1.5 billion program has been pivotal in bolstering the DRC’s economic stability. With the program nearing completion, questions have arisen about the future collaboration between the IMF and the DRC given the escalating debt and regional instabilities.

Director Selassie maintained a cautious stance on debt levels, stressing the importance of assessing debt sustainability against various economic indicators. Despite the DRC’s mounting external debt, the IMF asserts it to be sustainable due to economic growth and increased tax revenues. Upholding transparency and good governance in resource usage remains crucial for responsible debt management.

The IMF report underscores the need for ongoing collaboration with the DRC to support reform and economic advancement endeavors. The successful conclusion of the initial uninterrupted three-year program underlines the Congolese government’s determination to execute essential reforms. It also signifies a forward-looking strategy to fortify the country’s economic standing and foster regional financial stability.
