An essential collaboration for the inclusion of people with disabilities

In the realm of social inclusion and the rights of individuals with disabilities, a notable collaboration has emerged to amplify public awareness regarding the rights and privileges of people with disabilities. This collaboration was initiated during a meeting between the Minister and Dr. James Lalu, the Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, in Abuja on Wednesday, April 24.

The Minister, during this meeting, announced the formation of a dedicated committee that will work closely with the commission to comprehend the specific needs of individuals with disabilities. The primary goal is to ensure the realization of the aspirations and objectives of this community. The Minister has pledged to harness the resources of the commission, public information entities, and the mechanisms of his Ministry to safeguard the rights and dignity of people with disabilities and eradicate any form of discrimination against them.

He underscored President Tinubu’s commitment to fostering social inclusion, evident in his dedication to providing visibility, recognition, and accountability to individuals with disabilities within his administration. With a population of 35 million people living with disabilities, these individuals constitute a significant mass whose distinct viewpoints, skills, and experiences can enrich the forthcoming implementation of the Charter of National Values, aimed at instilling ethical principles and values in Nigeria.

Dr. Lalu, the Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, expressed his readiness to collaborate closely with the Ministry to raise awareness on the rights of individuals with disabilities. He emphasized the significance of the aspects of the Disability Act that mandate service providers to offer inclusive access to individuals with disabilities in various establishments, without any bias.

This collaboration holds the promise of giving a voice to people with disabilities, fully integrating them into society, and ensuring they receive the rights and benefits they rightfully deserve to thrive. This approach signifies substantial progress towards a more inclusive society that embraces the diversity of its citizens.
