A new political chapter opens in the Democratic Republic of Congo: the quest for a united government

A new chapter is unfolding in the Democratic Republic of Congo following President Félix Tshisekedi’s appointment of Judith Suminwa as Prime Minister. However, the formation of her government has hit some obstacles, delaying her official assumption of office.

While the DRC does not have a strict constitutional deadline for government formation, there was anticipation for the new cabinet announcement by the end of April. Yet, ongoing consultations with various parties and civil society actors have complicated the selection process.

The Sacred Union of the Nation, supporting President Tshisekedi, poses both strengths and challenges in government formation. With over 400 representatives from different parties, selecting ministers must carefully balance diverse expectations while maintaining a compact cabinet of around 45 positions.

Judith Suminwa recognizes the importance of selecting her government members thoughtfully, considering provincial diversity and required skills. Ongoing consultations with artists, unions, and civil society emphasize the aim to build a robust, representative team.

Amidst this, tensions within the National Assembly, especially surrounding recent presidential primaries, reflect discord within the Sacred Union, underscoring the hurdles in reaching consensus.

As the DRC transitions into a new phase under Judith Suminwa’s leadership, the upcoming weeks are crucial for forming an effective government that addresses the nation’s needs and tackles economic and social challenges.
