Tragedy of justice: a brother’s cry of despair in the face of police brutality

Recent news has once again brought to light the tragic consequences of unnecessary and unjustified violence. On April 23, 2024, a heartbreaking incident unfolded, resulting in the loss of a young man’s life at a celebratory event. The victim, identified as Iyanda, accompanied his brother Oluwafemi, a recent graduate of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), to a party following the graduation ceremony. However, what was meant to be a joyous occasion turned into a nightmare when police officers intervened, leading to a fatal shooting.

Oluwafemi’s harrowing account of that fateful night exposes the chaos and injustice that transpired. Injured by a gunshot himself, he witnessed the loss of his brother at the hands of a senseless police action. His words are filled with anguish and bewilderment, underscoring the urgent need for justice for his brother, an innocent victim of law enforcement brutality.

The events of that tragic night paint a grim picture of the harsh reality where life can be irrevocably altered in an instant. The students of LAUTECH, shaken by this tragedy, voiced their anger and disbelief, standing in solidarity with the grieving family and demanding accountability to prevent such incidents in the future.

This painful story raises pertinent questions about law enforcement accountability, the appropriate use of force, and the safeguarding of citizens’ rights and lives. It exposes the inherent flaws in a system that, instead of ensuring safety and justice for all, can perpetuate terror and disorder.

Amidst this tragedy, the resounding call for justice, transparency, and responsibility echoes loudly. This incident serves as a poignant reminder for society to uphold fundamental values such as reverence for life, protection of human rights, and the condemnation of indiscriminate violence.

In honor of the victim and in solidarity with his family, let us reaffirm our commitment to a world where justice and peace reign supreme, where every life is valued, and where unwarranted violence has no place.
