The Zohr Gas Field in Egypt stands out as a critical energy asset, playing a vital role in the country’s natural gas supply. Discovered in 2015 and commencing production at the end of 2017, it has swiftly become a cornerstone of Egypt’s energy industry. With a daily production exceeding two billion cubic meters and a peak capacity of 2.7 billion cubic feet per day, the Zohr Gas Field significantly contributes to meeting the nation’s energy demands.
Despite its impressive performance, the Zohr Gas Field encounters challenges typical of resource exploitation. Similar to many gas fields and oil wells, the natural decline of wells impacts production, with an average annual decline rate of 15%. To address this decline, the implementation of new development wells through drilling operations and the enhancement of the existing network’s efficiency are essential.
Located four kilometers beneath the water’s surface, the Zohr Gas Field operates under high pressures and temperatures, necessitating continual development and improved production station efficiency. Regular supervision and strengthening of the surface network that controls the wells are crucial to ensure optimal utilization of the deposit.
Since its inception, the Zohr Gas Field has yielded around five trillion cubic feet of gas and nine million barrels of condensate. Presently, it produces approximately two billion cubic feet per day. Despite speculations regarding unfair extraction practices, the Egyptian Ministry of Energy’s spokesperson highlighted the transparency of information provided by the field’s operating company and the oversight of development plans and reserve rates by Egyptian geologists.
To uphold the Zohr Gas Field’s potential, the Ministry of Energy actively participates in establishing new development wells, with 19 drilling operations currently in progress. The objective is to safeguard existing reserves while enhancing production rates to meet Egypt’s escalating energy needs.
