On this significant day of April 21, 2024, all attention is focused on Goma, situated in the heart of North Kivu province in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Bruno Lemarquis, the deputy special representative of the United Nations Secretary General, delivered a powerful address at a press briefing addressing the dire humanitarian situation faced by those displaced due to armed conflicts.
Lemarquis emphasized a crucial point with unwavering determination—the international humanitarian aid provided cannot be perceived as a definitive solution for the war-displaced individuals in North Kivu. He underscored the necessity of addressing the underlying causes of the conflicts comprehensively by the involved parties, specifically the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda, to truly resolve the humanitarian crisis lingering in the region.
“It is crucial to understand that humanitarian aid alone cannot resolve the plight of the displaced people in North Kivu. To genuinely overcome this humanitarian crisis in the DRC, we must confront the deep-seated roots of the conflict,” stressed Bruno Lemarquis. He reiterated that the humanitarian crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo is one of the oldest and most neglected globally, significantly impacting the country’s development even after more than three decades since its inception.
Additionally, Lemarquis highlighted the inadequate mobilization of funds to meet the urgent needs of internally displaced individuals in the DRC. Despite over 10 million people living in dire conditions, as of April 2024, only 15% of the required funds exceeding $2.6 billion have been raised.
Given the situation where many displaced individuals are cramped in overcrowded villages along the Sake-Bweremana axis, the United Nations has sounded an alarm. Urgent and efficient action from the international community is imperative to aid these vulnerable populations promptly and to put an end to this vast-scale humanitarian crisis.
In essence, the words of Bruno Lemarquis echo as a call for collective action and global consciousness. The time has come to progress from mere rhetoric to tangible actions, effecting true change in a region plagued by conflict and anguish. Beyond mere statistics and figures, it is human lives, shattered destinies yearning desperately for a glimmer of hope and solidarity.
