The South Kivu Roads Office is currently encountering significant challenges that are impeding the maintenance of the region’s road infrastructure. The provincial director of the public company, Engineer Alain Mugangu, has highlighted concerns regarding the limited financial resources and outdated equipment at the disposal of the Roads Office. These obstacles are directly affecting the organization’s capacity to conduct road rehabilitation projects in South Kivu effectively.
A key issue hindering project execution is the lack of recent investments in equipment. The last upgrade of tools dates back to 2009, leading to approximately fifteen years of waiting for essential renewals. This situation is weakening the operational efficiency of the Roads Office, thereby compromising the quality of its work. Moreover, adverse weather conditions, exacerbated by heavy rainfall in the region, have significantly disrupted ongoing rehabilitation initiatives.
Among the ongoing projects, the asphalt works between Bukavu and Kamanyola, carried out by the company Sinohydro, are experiencing delays due to the region’s unpredictable climate. Similarly, the rehabilitation of the RN2 national road between Bukavu and Minova is facing setbacks caused by marshy areas between Bukavu, Miti, and Bunyakiri, resulting in notable progress delays.
The Roads Office is compelled to rent equipment due to inadequate financial and logistical resources, increasing operational costs and hampering efficiency in the field. Given that the province is prone to natural disasters, there is an urgent need to identify sustainable solutions to enhance road infrastructure and ensure user safety.
In light of these significant challenges, the director of the Roads Office in South Kivu is urging the authorities to comprehensively update the essential machinery and equipment required for the company’s proper functioning. Long-term investments in the road infrastructure sector are crucial to fostering the economic and social development of the South Kivu region.
