Fight against insecurity in Kolwezi: 60 criminals arrested, what next measures?

Over the past month, a series of police interventions in Kolwezi have resulted in the arrest of more than 60 suspected criminals, showcasing significant progress in the fight against insecurity in the region. Led by Lualaba Provincial Minister of Interior, Deodat Kapenda wa Kapenda, these operations led to the confiscation of dangerous weapons and a substantial quantity of drugs, underscoring the authorities’ dedication to restoring peace and public order.

Despite these achievements, Kolwezi town grapples with ongoing security challenges, including incursions by armed bandits into residential areas, causing fear and anxiety among the local populace. Neighborhoods like RVA, Golf ISTM, and Joli Site bear the brunt of this insecurity, prompting young people to take proactive measures by organizing night patrols to safeguard their community.

Félix Tambwe Lufungula, president of the Lualaba society, emphasized the necessity of bolstering police presence and implementing effective measures to ensure the safety of Kolwezi residents. He urged authorities to act responsibly and decisively to halt this cycle of violence and insecurity that disrupts citizens’ daily lives.

The recent arrests demonstrate law enforcement’s resolve to combat crime and protect the population. Nonetheless, it is imperative to adopt a holistic approach, engaging not only security forces but also implementing preventive measures and social programs to foster social cohesion and reduce the factors fueling criminal activities. Only through a united and coordinated effort by all segments of society can a safer and more prosperous future be guaranteed for Kolwezi and its inhabitants.
