A new direction for university research in the DRC: the General Research Secretariats

The recent establishment of General Research Secretariats within higher education institutions in the Democratic Republic of Congo signifies a significant reform in the country’s higher education landscape. This reform, emanating from the 2021 general assembly in Lubumbashi, is designed to reinvigorate scientific research in the nation and to center innovation as a core mission of Congolese universities.

Previously, the oversight of scientific research largely fell under the purview of the Academic Secretary General. However, the creation of these General Research Secretariats marks a shift towards emphasizing the vital role of research in national development. Professor Casimir Ngumbi from the University of Kindu underscored the indispensable nature of scientific research in driving progress and innovation.

Investing in research is fundamental for the comprehensive advancement of any country. Consequently, higher education institutions in the DRC have chosen to realign their priorities, prioritizing research, education, and community service at the forefront of their objectives. This strategic shift aims to foster researcher creativity and stimulate the emergence of innovative technologies and locally crafted solutions.

Professor Ngumbi also emphasized the necessity of moving away from imported knowledge, often deemed irrelevant to the Congolese context. By championing indigenous research, Congolese universities can substantially contribute to sustainable national development and tailor solutions to address the populace’s needs.

While the implementation of General Research Secretariats prompts questions and debates, some highlighting challenges and adjustments, others view this transformation as an avenue to revolutionize the Congolese education system. As noted by Professor Émile Bongeli, it is common for reforms to evoke varying reactions, but the key is to stay committed to excellence and innovation.

In essence, the establishment of General Research Secretariats in higher education institutions in the DRC signifies a pivotal juncture in the nation’s educational history. By prioritizing research and innovation, Congolese universities position themselves as pivotal contributors to the scientific and technological progression of the country. This milestone heralds new horizons for higher education in the DRC and underscores the nation’s aspiration to partake in a trajectory of excellence and advancement.
