Peres Jepchirchir sets new world record in 2022 London Marathon

The recent edition of the London Marathon witnessed extraordinary performances by Kenyan athletes, showcasing their endurance and mental strength. Peres Jepchirchir’s exceptional feat of setting a new world record for an all-female marathon was a highlight of the event. Despite aiming to qualify for the Olympics, Jepchirchir not only achieved her goal but also secured a historic victory.

During the race’s climax, Jepchirchir dominated, leaving her competitors behind as she dashed towards the finish line in front of Buckingham Palace. Crossing it in 2 hours, 16 minutes, and 16 seconds at 30 years old, she outpaced Tigst Assefa and Joyciline Jepkosgei, claiming first place. While her time fell short of the overall world record, it stood as the fastest all-female marathon time, surpassing the previous record set by Mary Keitany in 2017.

This triumph is significant as it solidifies Jepchirchir’s spot in the Kenyan Olympic team for the upcoming Paris Games. Reflecting on her performance, she expressed surprise at her time, emphasizing her primary focus on defending her Olympic title.

The victory marks a redemption for Jepchirchir after finishing third in the previous London Marathon. Her boosted confidence from this win sets a positive tone as she prepares for Paris. Furthermore, Alexander Mutiso Munyao’s win in the men’s race added to Kenya’s success, illustrating their dominance in marathon running.

Despite the celebrations, the day was shadowed by the loss of Kelvin Kiptum, the previous year’s champion, in a tragic car accident. The 2022 London Marathon will be remembered for exceptional displays of athleticism, poignant narratives, and the unwavering resilience of elite runners.
