Therapeutic journey: Lighting up the shadows of the soul

Exploring the depths of the human soul often leads us to confront universal truths that are beyond our comprehension. One of the most profound mysteries we encounter is the certainty of our own mortality. While we acknowledge the inevitability of death, we struggle to fully grasp its implications.

Death serves as a stark reminder of the impermanence of our existence. It appears to taunt our ambitions, projects, and achievements, rendering them insignificant. Yet, it is this very limitation that gives purpose to our lives, urging us to take action and accomplish what we deem essential within a finite timeframe. Without the constraint of mortality, we might perpetually defer tasks to the future, leading to a sense of existential guilt.

Additionally, humans, perhaps alongside beached whales, possess the ability to choose death when life becomes unbearable.

These reflections lay the foundation for the poignant narrative I am about to recount. It is the tale of a transformative journey experienced by a dear friend and me, reflecting the struggles that millions face daily in maintaining their psychological well-being, their “mental health.”

A year ago, I found myself seated on a mattress in a dimly lit room, holding the hand of a friend who had recently attempted suicide. Plunged into financial ruin and isolation after losing his job, he had reached a dire low point. In that moment, I felt utterly powerless in the face of his despair. Sometimes, words seem inadequate; all I could do was to be there for him until paramedics arrived to transport him to the hospital.

Following this tragedy, I, too, was engulfed in a tumultuous inner turmoil. The exact triggers for this personal crisis elude me to this day. “Mental health” is a delicate equilibrium, a fusion of thoughts that propel us forward, often operating beneath our conscious awareness.

In his book “Fatshimetrie: Lessons from Daily Life” (Penguin, 2023), Alain de Botton highlights that a healthy mind acts as an editor, aligning our thoughts with reality. When our thoughts stray from the present moment, our peace of mind wavers. Anxieties about the future invaded my mind, eroding all happiness and turning sleep, typically a solace, into a haunted realm.

Thus, fixating on the imperative to act without witnessing tangible progress can swiftly breed feelings of disgust and self-deprecation. This negative spiral, coupled with the burden of disappointment, can thrust us into a willful paralysis that remains incomprehensible to those around us.

What is perhaps most chilling is the swiftness with which this descent into despair unfolded. In a matter of weeks, I transitioned from outward stability to contemplating the bleakest outcomes. Witnessing our greatest asset, our mind, slip away in such a manner is disconcerting.

Meanwhile, my friend had concealed his inner torment, confiding solely in his therapist, further isolating himself. His suicide note, later revealed, illuminated the intricate web of deception he had woven, obstructing any path to recovery.

In essence, our internal battles are fragile territories where solitude, desolation, and daily strife mingle to sustain the flicker of hope for the days ahead. Hence, learning to acknowledge our struggles, share them without shame, lend a listening ear and a compassionate heart, can at times make all the difference in our pursuit of life-saving therapy.

Though fraught with obstacles, this therapeutic odyssey can signify a rebirth, a reconnection to oneself and others, a beacon in the darkness. Ultimately, mental health is an inward expedition where each encounter, each detour, serves as a lesson guiding us toward wisdom and healing.

As the shadows of our torments gradually dissipate in the night, a glimmer of hope emerges on the horizon, heralding a new chapter, a forthcoming personal rebirth.
