“Emergency in Kwilu: a mysterious plague decimates herds of small ruminants, the survival of breeders at stake”

In early 2024, a dire situation unfolds in various villages of the Imbongo sector in the Kwilu province, as a mysterious plague wreaks havoc on herds of small ruminants, including goats and pigs. Civil society member and breeder Jean Malundu has reported the devastating impact, with over 40 goats and goats, along with 30 pigs, succumbing to the disease so far.

The onset of this affliction is marked by severe diarrhea in goats and goats, followed by a persistent cough, ultimately leading to paralysis and death within days. Affected pigs exhibit symptoms such as reddish skin and loss of balance before meeting the same fate. Villages like Kumbi, Kilwenge, Kinsomi, Mbidi, and Kimputu bear the brunt of this calamity, posing a threat to the livelihoods of local breeders.

In light of this crisis, Jean Malundu has issued a urgent plea to authorities to swiftly intervene and assist the affected breeders facing substantial losses. Beyond the economic implications, this epidemic jeopardizes food security in the region, necessitating a prompt and coordinated response.

Urgent measures must be implemented to contain the spread of the disease, safeguard herds, and support the livelihoods of breeders. Collective solidarity and mobilization are vital to overcome this adversity and protect the valuable animal heritage of the Kwilu region.
