Rising insecurity in Goma: the call for action to restore peace

In the midst of recent violence in the city of Goma, North Kivu province, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the community faces escalating insecurity and crime. Tragic incidents involving law enforcement and armed criminals have instilled fear and uncertainty among residents.

On the night of Monday, April 15th to Tuesday, April 16th, the Katoyi district of the commune of Karisimbi witnessed a horrific event where two brave members of the Congolese National Police lost their lives during a confrontation with armed bandits trying to steal from a health center. The intense exchanges of fire left the population in shock.

In the Majengo district, armed individuals caused panic by robbing passers-by and injuring those who resisted. Acts of violence like these are contributing to a climate of growing insecurity and fear within the community.

Even during daylight hours, violence remained prevalent, as demonstrated by an attack at the Rutshuru roundabout where a minibus heading to Goma international airport was hit by a bullet, leading to chaos and temporary suspension of traffic.

These incidents underscore the urgent need for local and national authorities to take immediate action to ensure the safety of citizens, restore trust in law enforcement, and implement effective strategies to prevent and combat criminal activities. Building solidarity and resilience within the community will be crucial in overcoming these challenges and forging a future of peace and prosperity for Goma and its inhabitants.
