Let’s protect our children: the alarming rise in cases of food poisoning in South Africa

Amidst recent tragic events in the Gauteng province of South Africa, a concerning issue of food poisoning cases affecting primarily children has come to light. The Gauteng Department of Health has been alarmed by the increasing instances of food poisoning among young residents in the province.

Shockingly, 41 children, aged between 3 and 5, were rushed to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital after ingesting rat poison, mistaking it for candy. Additionally, 10 other individuals were treated at Thelle Mogoerane Regional Hospital in Ekurhuleni after consuming toxic substances.

These incidents have contributed to a total of 863 reported cases of foodborne illnesses since October, tragically resulting in 11 deaths. In response to this alarming situation, Khutso Rabothata, interim communications manager, has assured that the necessary support and resources will be provided to the affected communities.

The department is urging parents and caregivers to remain vigilant and collaborate in efforts to prevent food poisoning. Public health awareness campaigns are being conducted in townships, informal settlements, and households to educate the public about the risks of foodborne illnesses and preventive measures.

It is crucial to raise awareness about the significance of food safety, proper food handling, and precautions to prevent accidents related to toxic substance ingestion.
