Improved access to vaccines in the DRC: support from Japan strengthens the health fight

The article “FATSHIMETRY: The keys to access to vaccines – Japan supports the DRC in its health fight,” highlights the recent donation of refrigerated vehicles by the Japanese government to strengthen the vaccine cold chain in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This crucial initiative, in partnership with the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) and the UN Agency for Project Support Services (UNOPS), aims to enhance access to preventive health services for the Congolese population.

As part of this effort, the symbolic keys to eight refrigerated vehicles were handed over to various provinces, including Haut-Katanga, Maniema, North and South Kivu, Kasaï-Oriental, Kinshasa, Sankuru, and Kwango. Additionally, two logistics jeeps were allocated to Kinshasa, while vaccine freezers will be installed in six cold rooms across the country to bolster the preservation and distribution of vaccines.

This collaborative endeavor involving Japan, UNOPS, EPI, and the World Health Organization (WHO) signifies a significant advancement in public health in the DRC. Alongside the vehicle donation, WHO provided 9,000 tablets to enhance health data collection and analysis, thereby improving health surveillance and informing public health policy decisions.

The joint commitment of these organizations underscores the importance of investing in robust health infrastructure to ensure equitable access to essential vaccines and combat preventable diseases effectively. This solidarity and dedication to public health underscore the spirit of international cooperation, promising a healthier and more prosperous future for all Congolese.
