The highly anticipated Nigeria Police Awards and Commendations ceremony recently took place at the luxurious Transcorp Hilton in Abuja, where Vice-President Kashim Shettima graced the event on behalf of the esteemed Bola Tinubu. Tinubu emphasized the crucial need for a comprehensive transformation in the mindset and institutional memory of police officers to modernize, professionalize, and enhance accountability within the security force.
Since assuming office in 2023, Tinubu’s administration has spearheaded ambitious reforms to rejuvenate the national police, placing paramount importance on the training and capacity building of officers to equip them with the necessary skills for contemporary policing duties.
The Federal Government has officially designated the week beginning in April as Police Week, with April 7 now recognized as National Police Day in Nigeria. Tinubu underscored the significance of viewing police officers as individuals worthy of respect and humanity, rather than mere shields or automatons.
As Nigeria grapples with escalating security threats, Tinubu commended the valor and patriotism of police officers, acknowledging the sacrifices they make to safeguard citizens in the face of danger. He pledged to support them by investing in training, modern equipment, and technology to bolster their operational efficiency in tackling complex security challenges.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio also lauded the Inspector General of Police for honoring the dedication and patriotism of the police force’s personnel, heralding a new chapter for law enforcement in the country.
The Nigeria Police Awards and Commendations ceremony stands as a testament to the acknowledgment and appreciation of the law enforcement agencies’ work in upholding peace and order in our communities. It serves as a well-deserved tribute to these unsung heroes, heralding a new era for a modern and effective Police Force in Nigeria.
