Institutional reconfiguration at the provincial assembly of Haut-Katanga

The Haut-Katanga provincial assembly recently underwent a significant transformation with the restructuring of its leadership, following the ousting of the previous office by a petition from provincial deputies. This organizational change, which took place on Monday, April 15, resulted in the introduction of a new team at the helm of the provincial deliberative body.

During a brief plenary session held for the installation, lasting approximately twenty minutes, the assembly’s administration oversaw the appointment of a new interim leadership. MP Liliana Komba was selected to head this provisional office, supported by two new youthful members. The primary objective of this swift designation was to ensure the continuity of the assembly’s functions amidst the upcoming senatorial and governor elections.

Key preliminary tasks, such as legitimizing deputies’ mandates and formulating internal regulations, have already been completed. The next agenda item is to conduct the election and induction of the permanent office, slated for the upcoming plenary session set for next Thursday.

Significantly, the reshuffle transpired in the absence of the former office members and opposition deputies. Reports indicate that the deposed president is presently in Kinshasa following these developments.

This transition within the Haut-Katanga provincial assembly underscores the criticality of stable and uninterrupted political institutions to facilitate the effective functioning of local democracy. The appointment of a fresh team to lead the assembly’s office paves the way for new opportunities, notably the election of the permanent office, crucial for the province’s future.
