Fatshimetrie: Beni in state of emergency in the face of ADF attacks

The city of Beni, in the province of North Kivu, was recently shaken by the Fatshimetrie event on April 16, leading to a dead city day declared by pressure groups and citizen movements. The cause of this mobilization was the surge in attacks by the ADF in areas like Sayo, Kasanga-Tuha, and Mangina, resulting in the tragic deaths of nearly forty civilians in less than three weeks.

The people of Beni are facing a wave of terror, highlighted by a recent attack in the Sayo district that claimed the lives of 15 individuals, including 6 women. The sudden escalation of violence has alarmed the residents and civil society in Beni, prompting calls for large-scale military operations to combat the ADF rebels and restore peace to the region.

Various stakeholders have voiced their concerns and proposed actions to address the crisis. Arsène Mwaka, a national deputy representing Beni, emphasized the need for swift and decisive measures to halt the violence. Omar Kalisya, the president of civil society in Beni, underscored the urgency of military intervention to protect the civilian population. Additionally, Achille Kapanga, a lawyer and independent analyst, pointed out the complexity of the security situation in the region and stressed the importance of a strategic approach to counter armed groups.

The situation in Beni demands an immediate response from Congolese authorities to ensure the safety of citizens and restore stability in a region plagued by violence. International support is also crucial in addressing the security challenges faced by the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is imperative for collective action to bring an end to these atrocities and pave the way for a peaceful future for the people of Beni and all of North Kivu.
