In the Beni region of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) continue to instill fear and terror among the residents with their frequent incursions. A recent attack on Friday, April 12, 2024, resulted in the brutal killing of at least 12 civilians in the Sayo and Kasanga-Tuha neighborhoods of Mulekera commune. The victims, mostly farmers, faced a harrowing fate – some were mercilessly murdered in their fields, while others were ambushed on their way there, experiencing the brutality of bladed weapons and firearms as witnessed by those present.
Bahati Kawaya’s harrowing escape from death by declaring his affiliation with Islam sheds light on the horrific events unfolding. He tragically witnessed his friend’s violent beating and decapitation at the hands of the attackers, some of whom were dressed in military attire while others donned Muslim clothing. These barbaric acts underscore the ruthless and extreme violence perpetrated by the ADF in the region, leaving inhabitants in a perpetual state of shock and fear.
In response to the escalating violence, the Congolese armed forces (FARDC) and the Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) undertook a mission to retrieve the victims’ bodies from the areas of Makene, Toda, and Burutsu. This concerted effort aims to honor the deceased and restore a semblance of justice in a region plagued by unrelenting terror.
The traumatized population of Beni is calling on authorities to implement urgent measures to ensure their safety and quell the deadly activities of the ADF. The ongoing tragedies and loss of lives have transformed the northwest part of the city into a grim stage where violence dominates.
It is imperative for decisive and efficient actions to be taken to safeguard innocent civilians, dismantle the armed groups responsible for these heinous acts, and reinstate peace and security in this conflict-ridden area. The international community must stand in solidarity with local authorities to end this cycle of violence that breeds death and despair among civilians.
The alarming situation in Beni demands an immediate and coordinated response to halt the violence and insecurity afflicting the region. Residents deserve peace, security, and justice, and it is incumbent upon everyone to ensure these fundamental rights are reinstated.
