Negative impact of the M23 conflict on SAEMAPE in the DRC

**The M23 war negatively impacts the functioning of SAEMAPE in the DRC**

The North Kivu province in the Democratic Republic of Congo is facing major challenges due to the war led by the M23. This armed tension disrupts the activities of the Supervision and Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining Service (SAEMAPE), causing disastrous consequences for its proper functioning.

Since the rebels took control of the strategic city of Mushaki, SAEMAPE has been facing a series of problems. Mushaki is a crucial point for the evacuation of minerals from Masisi and Walikale territories, and its closure not only disrupts production, but also prevents access to mining sites.

In addition to these difficulties, the war had an impact on the social benefits of SAEMAPE employees. The death of three agents due to lack of adequate medical care is a tragic example of the human consequences of this armed conflict. In addition, the agents, who are the engine of revenue generation, have been suffering from salary arrears for four months, in addition to the suspension of all social benefits.

Faced with this critical situation, the general management of SAEMAPE took measures to mitigate the effects of the war. The payment of salary arrears for agents in Kinshasa is a first step towards resolving the crisis within the service.

It is crucial for the authorities to find lasting solutions to allow SAEMAPE to operate effectively despite the context of armed conflict. Peace and stability in the region are essential to ensure the proper functioning of this institution and guarantee the well-being of employees who play a key role in the artisanal and small-scale mining sector in the DRC. Only a peaceful environment will make it possible to restore prosperity and sustainable development in this region where mining resources are an essential source of income.
