Atiku highlights transparency concerns in management of Lagos-Calabar coastal highway

In the management of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project, former Vice President Atiku expressed concerns over the transparency and management of funds allocated to the venture. Atiku stressed the importance of transparency, especially during these difficult economic times in Nigeria. He called on the Tinubu administration to reveal the total cost of the project and explain some key decisions taken along the way.

One of Atiku’s main concerns is the awarding of the contract to Gilbert Chagoury’s Hitech without a competitive tender, raising concerns about the fairness of the process. Furthermore, the ex-vice president questioned the allocation of N1.06 trillion for the initial phase of the project, representing 6% of the total. This phase, which begins at Eko Atlantic and ends at the deep water port of Lekki, raises questions about the justification for this high amount.

Through his statements, Atiku challenged the Tinubu government by asking six key questions. He demanded the disclosure of the total cost of the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway, questioning public funding of the project despite the public-private partnership (PPP) approach. Furthermore, he highlighted the absence of a call for tenders and the lack of approval from the National Assembly for the colossal amount allocated for the pilot phase.

In short, Atiku calls for transparency and accountability in the management of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project. It highlights legitimate concerns regarding cost justification, the contract award process and adherence to established procedures. Stressing the importance of responding to public queries in a constructive and honest manner, Atiku calls on the government to be accountable and ensure efficient management of resources for the well-being of all Nigerians.
