Terrorism and instability in the DRC: Deadly ADF attacks in Epanza revive the urgency of concerted action

The recent attacks perpetrated by Allied Democratic Force (ADF) rebels in the Irumu region of Ituri are a sad reflection of the violence and instability that continue to plague this region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The night of Saturday to Sunday April 7 will remain etched in the memory of the inhabitants of Epanza, a village in the Walese-Vonkutu chiefdom, where the attackers sowed terror by killing at least 8 civilians and taking several people hostage.

The account of events reveals brutal and merciless violence. The ADF rebels appeared around 8 p.m. local time, unleashing real hell for the peaceful inhabitants of this village. Gunshots echoed through the night as innocent lives were mercilessly cut down. Among the victims, nationals of the battered area of Beni, already severely affected by recurring ADF attacks for years.

The local community, in shock and pain, is calling for stronger measures from the authorities to counter this persistent threat. Calls to step up security patrols and take residents’ warnings seriously resonate with increased urgency. The terror of the ADF must not continue to bloody this region already scarred by conflicts and violence.

However, a few days before this attack, the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) had inflicted a setback on the rebels by neutralizing a rebel leader and his bodyguards on the border between Ituri and North Kivu. This example of an effective response shows that the determination of the armed forces to protect the population can bear fruit.

However, the safety of civilians remains a major concern. The authorities must redouble their efforts to guarantee the protection of local populations against the abuses of armed groups. Cooperation between security forces and local communities is essential to prevent such tragedies in the future.

In conclusion, the bloody attack in Epanza once again highlights the urgency of finding lasting solutions to end the violence of armed groups in eastern DRC. The civilian population must not be abandoned to its fate in the face of the terrorist threat. It is imperative to continue the fight for peace and security, in order to guarantee a better future for the inhabitants of this battered region.
