Honoring the courage of women victims of electoral violence

During the closing of Women’s Month, an important event took place within the CENI facilities: a ceremony aimed at paying tribute to the women who were victims of electoral violence during the infamous December 20, 2023. This event, chaired by the 2nd vice-president of the CENI, Didi Manara Linga, was marked by speeches full of solidarity and support towards these courageous women who endured physical abuse while they were simply carrying out their civic duty.

During his speech, Didi Manara Linga vehemently denounced these acts of violence, calling for those responsible to be sought and brought to justice in order to prevent such atrocities from happening again. He also highlighted the risk that these heinous actions would discourage women and other vulnerable people from participating in upcoming elections, highlighting the importance of their inclusion and engagement in the democratic process.

The members of the plenary, Adine d’or Omokoko and Joséphine Ngalula Kabeya, also took the floor to recall the importance of this commemoration, its essential link with the electoral process and to formulate concrete recommendations to strengthen security and respect for electoral procedures. The poignant testimonies of the victims aroused strong emotion among the participants, highlighting the seriousness and profound impact of the violence suffered.

As a token of recognition and support, symbolic trophies were presented to some of the victims present, symbolizing encouragement and respect for their courage and resilience. This ceremony not only paid tribute to the women affected by this violence, but also raised awareness throughout society of the importance of respecting the rights and dignity of everyone in the democratic context.

In conclusion, this initiative by the CENI and the various actors involved underlines the urgency and necessity of fighting against electoral violence and promoting a culture of respect and tolerance within Congolese society. Hope lies in the mobilization of all in favor of free, fair and inclusive elections, where every citizen, whatever their condition, can exercise their right to vote with dignity and security.
