“TikTok under fire: when social networks become the scene of online crime”

In the constantly evolving digital world, social networks have become essential platforms for sharing content, interacting with other users, but also for promoting illicit activities. Recently, a post on TikTok sparked controversy: an individual proudly displayed money suspected of having been obtained by ransoming his kidnapping victims.

The authorities quickly reacted to this shocking scene, condemning TikTok for authorizing the distribution of such content on its platform. Zagazola Makama, of the secret police, strongly criticized this situation, denouncing the fact that criminals can easily promote their criminal acts to thousands of followers, without facing restrictions.

A recent investigation into kidnappings in the country revealed alarming statistics: between July 2022 and June 2023, no fewer than 582 kidnapping incidents were recorded, resulting in the abduction of 3,495 individuals. Ransom demands have reached at least 5 billion naira ($6.4 million), but verified payments amount to only 302 million naira ($387,179), representing just 6% of the total amount demanded .

This in-depth study by SBM Intelligence sheds light on the complex dynamics of kidnapping, highlighting the differences between individual cases and those involving entire communities. Large-scale kidnappings are often less discreet, exposing the criminal activities that plague certain regions of the country.

It is imperative that digital platforms like TikTok strengthen their moderation measures to prevent the promotion of violence and organized crime on their networks. It is also up to the competent authorities to prosecute and severely punish those who endanger the lives and safety of innocent citizens for financial gain. Together, as a society, we must work towards a safer online environment free from all forms of crime.
