“Colombia: resumption of offensive actions against dissident FARC factions – where is the quest for peace?”

The Colombian government has just announced the resumption of offensive actions against the main dissident faction of the Farc in three regions of the country, namely Nariño, Cauca and Valle del Cauca. This decision follows an attack carried out by the rebels against a group of indigenous people in Toribio, thus ending the truce concluded with this dissident faction.

This escalation of violence comes less than a month after the suspension of peace talks with the ELN and calls into question the progress made with the Farc dissident armed groups. President Gustavo Petro condemned the attack in Toribio, in which a woman was killed, noting that the targeted indigenous people were attending a public event organized by his government.

Despite the suspension of the truce in the three departments concerned, it remains in force in other regions of the country, such as the Amazon and the border with Venezuela. This highlights the continuing security and peace challenges facing Colombia, even under the presidency of Gustavo Petro, who is striving to implement a policy of “total peace” aimed at disarming armed groups still active in the country.

The current situation in Colombia reflects the complexity of the issues related to peacebuilding in a context of protracted armed conflict. The continued instability in certain regions of the country highlights the importance of continuing efforts to achieve lasting and inclusive peace for the entire Colombian population.
