In this year 2024, teachers in the Tshopo educational province, more precisely in the territories of Banalia, Bafwasende, Ubundu, Basoko and some schools in the city of Kisangani, found themselves in a delicate situation. Indeed, they found themselves obliged to express their dissatisfaction with the non-payment of their salary for the month of January 2024 by the structure of the Catholic Church, Caritas-Kisangani.
On Monday, February 19, teachers expressed their disagreement by blocking the entrance to the Caritas/Kisangani office with burning tires, seeking to draw attention to their precarious financial situation. The tension is palpable, and teachers are legitimately demanding payment of their salaries in order to meet their basic needs.
Faced with this situation, Father Ferdinand Batubu, coordinator of Caritas/Kisangani, tried to calm things down by explaining that the problem lies in the fact that the teachers’ accounts have not yet been funded. He also emphasizes that the responsibility for paying salaries lies with the central government, stressing that until funds are transferred to the Catholic Church, it will be difficult to make payments.
It is undeniable that this situation highlights the challenges faced by many teachers in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where late payments are unfortunately commonplace. Hopefully this situation will be quickly resolved to ensure the well-being of teachers and the continuity of education for students.
