The permanent representative of the Democratic Republic of Congo to the UN, Zénon Makongo, recently raised a crucial issue at the Security Council meeting: the withdrawal of Rwandan troops from Congolese territory. Faced with repeated attacks by the RDF-M23 coalition, this withdrawal has become more urgent than ever.
The Congolese ambassador highlighted the reinforcement of Rwandan troops near Goma, as well as the attacks against MONUSCO drones and the bombing of Goma international airport. These actions are considered blatant violations of the sovereignty of the DRC.
The consequences of these attacks should not be underestimated, with millions of people displaced in the territories of Rutshuru, Masisi and Nyiragongo. The Security Council must act and demand from Rwanda the immediate withdrawal of its troops from Congolese territory, as well as an end to all support for armed groups such as the M23.
Congolese authorities are taking measures to guarantee the safety of MONUSCO members following incidents during a recent demonstration in Kinshasa. Washington’s call to Kigali for the withdrawal of troops and surface-to-air missile systems highlights the urgency of the situation.
It is imperative that the international community do more to put an end to these attacks and promote peace in the region. Respect for the sovereignty of nations and the security of civilians must be absolute priorities.
