**Shocking images of suspects thin and weakened after hunger strike at court in Mombasa, Kenya**
During a court hearing in Mombasa, Kenya, harrowing images were circulated showing extremely thin and weakened suspects facing murder charges. These suspects, members of a doomsday cult led by Paul Mackenzie, were forced to receive emergency treatment after being carried into the courtroom, too weak to even open their eyes.
Paul Mackenzie, his wife Rhoda Maweu and 94 of his followers face 238 counts of murder in the deaths of 429 members of their church, who died after apparently starving themselves in the hope of meeting Jesus Christ before the end of the world.
The court ordered that the accused be immediately escorted to the hospital for a medical examination as some of them were barely able to stand or open their eyes. Autopsies revealed that some of the bodies found in shallow graves had died of starvation, strangulation or asphyxiation.
Authorities discovered the victims’ bodies in an isolated area after police rescued 15 weakened church members who revealed that Paul Mackenzie had encouraged them to fast to death. These terrible events took place between January 2021 and September 2023 in Kilifi County.
The Kenyan government’s chief pathologist announced the resumption of the search for more bodies in the Shakahola forest in March, after completing autopsies and DNA analyzes on the remains already recovered.
These images of suspects in critical health raise crucial questions about sectarian manipulation and religious extremism. It is crucial to raise awareness and protect vulnerable people from such influences, reminding us of the importance of vigilance and education to avoid such tragedies in the future.
