“Ferry accident in Lagos: the urgency of improving maritime safety in the region”

The recent ferry accident at the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge in Lagos has once again highlighted the maritime safety challenges in the region. According to Mrs Wuraola Alake of the LASWA Public Affairs Unit, the accident occurred around the Power Line corridor, with the Ibeshe-bound ferry named T-Ben having a collision with the submerged concrete shore.

Alake confirmed that fifteen of the seventeen passengers on board were rescued, with unfortunately one death to report. Rescue efforts are underway, with officers of the Lagos State Waterways Authority Search and Rescue Unit and other volunteers on scene.
