In a context of escalating tensions in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO) has taken important steps to strengthen its presence in Goma, in the North province. Kivu.
Faced with the increase in hostilities, MONUSCO launched a firm appeal to the armed group M23, supported by the Rwandan armed forces, to put an end to its aggressive actions. In an official statement, the Mission announced the deployment of South African peacekeepers from the Intervention Brigade in Goma and Sake, in order to secure the main roads leading to these key areas of the region.
This decision comes in response to the deterioration of the security situation around Goma and Sake, marked by massive displacements of civilians fleeing the clashes. MONUSCO, as part of its mandate to protect civilians, set up a security perimeter near its base in Kitshanga to accommodate and protect the thousands of displaced people.
The MONUSCO force commander also strengthened cooperation with the Congolese army by deploying Pakistani forces in South Kivu province. This collaboration demonstrates MONUSCO’s commitment to ensuring the security of civilian populations and supporting stabilization efforts in the region.
At the same time, the UN Mission will continue to work to enable women, children and the elderly affected by the violence to find a semblance of security and assistance in this troubled region.
This action by MONUSCO underlines the importance of international commitment to protect vulnerable populations and promote stability in regions plagued by armed conflict. By strengthening its presence in Goma, the Mission actively contributes to the protection of civilians and the promotion of peace in this part of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
