Operation SPRING BOK: MONUSCO intensifies its fight against the M23 offensive in North Kivu

Title: MONUSCO operations to counter the M23 offensive in North Kivu

In a context of growing tensions, the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) is stepping up its efforts to support the Congolese Armed Forces (FARDC) in the North Kivu province, in the face of the Movement’s offensive of March 23 (M23).

MONUSCO recently intensified its actions with operation SPRING BOK, the objective of which is to strengthen the defense of the positions of the Blue Helmets in the face of the advance of the M23. South African troops from the MONUSCO Intervention Brigade were deployed to reinforce the Indian, Moroccan and Uruguayan contingents present in the strategic towns of Saké and Goma. These reinforcements aim to counter the M23 offensive, which intensified on February 7, 2024.

Securing the RN2 national road linking Saké and Goma is a priority for MONUSCO. In this context, South African troops based in Beni were mobilized to strengthen defense systems along this essential route. This reinforcement is in addition to the presence of Indian, Moroccan and Uruguayan forces who have maintained defensive positions since the launch of Operation Springbok at the end of last year.

At the same time, new clashes were reported between the FARDC and M23 fighters, supported by Rwandan forces, in the village of Ndumba, located between Saké and Minova, in Masisi territory. The FARDC is leading a counterattack to regain control of the town of Shasha, currently in the hands of the M23. These clashes have led to further population displacements, worsening an already complex humanitarian situation in the region.

The escalation of tensions and clashes in North Kivu underlines the importance of the presence of MONUSCO to guarantee the protection of civilians and stability in the region. The Mission’s operations aim to contain the M23 offensive and prevent a deterioration of the security situation. It is essential for the actors involved to work together to find lasting solutions to this conflict and to ensure the security and well-being of the affected populations.
