The Territorial Administrator of Djugu, Ruphin Mapela, expressed his deep dismay at the murder of 15 civilians in Tali by CODECO militiamen. This tragedy, which occurred on Monday February 19, raises serious concerns about the increase in attacks perpetrated by this militia, as well as reprisals by the self-defense group in several areas of the territory, such as Musaba, Mabendi, Mbidjo, Mbogi and Café .
The recent violence is undermining peace agreements reached last year in Aru, about 300 kilometers from Bunia. Ruphin Mapela expressed his disappointment at this situation, highlighting the constant efforts made to restore peace in the territory of Djugu, which is constantly swept away by these tragic events. He also warned the population and the group of 5 victim communities (G5) against any form of revenge which would risk worsening the cycle of violence in Ituri.
After a period of calm, violence appears to have resumed throughout the Djugu region, jeopardizing efforts to stabilize peace. It is essential to remain vigilant and find lasting solutions to end this cycle of violence. which hinders the development and security of the population.
Ruphin Mapela’s statement raises crucial questions about the current situation in Ituri and highlights the need for coordinated action to establish lasting peace in the region. Authorities and civil society actors must join forces to combat this violence and ensure the security and stability of local communities.
