At the heart of the University of Kano (KUST), a scene of tension recently shook students. Indeed, the Kano Police spokesperson, Abdullahi Kiyawa, revealed this situation on Monday, February 19, 2024.
An X (formerly Twitter) user, @Smashingdollar3, shared videos of the invasion on his profile, saying that suspected thieves entered the area, but students mobilized to chase them down.
He explained that when they returned to the dormitory, thugs arrived and began banging on doors and windows, wielding machetes and accusing the students of not intervening during the invasion of the community.
Despite the intervention of the police, the thugs continued to harass the students without worrying about the presence of the police.
@Smashingdollar3 tweeted: “This is what happened at KUST. These individuals came asking why we didn’t participate in the hunt for the thieves. We did try to chase the thieves who arrived around midnight, but without success .
When we returned around 3:30 a.m., a few individuals armed with machetes broke down our doors, accusing us of not having come out during the invasion. Even with the presence of the police, they did not stop their harassment. If one of us was caught, it could have turned into a tragedy. Is it a crime to be in college?”
Video from the scene shows damaged dormitory windows, frames torn out and glass shattered.
Police spokesperson Abdullahi Kiyawa confirmed the incident, saying an investigation is underway to identify the culprits and bring them to justice. He also highlighted the absence of victims.
Kiyawa said: “The incident was reported and the Wudil police officer visited the scene. No casualties were reported, but an investigation was launched. It was not a attack but an invasion by suspected thugs. Some students reported theft of property.”
This series of events shatters the tranquility of the student environment at the University of Kano, highlighting the risks posed by the growing insecurity in the region.
