“Exorbitant banking fees in the DRC: the urgent call for regulation to protect customers”

Excessive banking fees and charges by commercial banks in the Democratic Republic of Congo continue to spark outrage. According to economist Noël Tshiani Muadiamvita, these abusive practices are not found anywhere else and heavily penalize Congolese customers.

Indeed, the costs of transferring money from one account to another within the same country are exorbitant, contrary to what is practiced elsewhere. A simple funds transfer can cost customers thousands of dollars, while in other countries these fees are minimal or non-existent.

Likewise, cash withdrawal fees are disproportionate by international standards. A customer wishing to withdraw a sum of cash from their savings account is charged considerable fees, which represents a real obstacle to accessing their own money.

Faced with this alarming observation, Noël Tshiani Muadiamvita calls on the Congolese authorities, in particular the Central Bank of Congo, to intervene and regulate this sector in order to protect the interests of customers and promote a fairer financial system.

It is undeniable that clarification of pricing policies and transparency in the practices of commercial banks are essential to guarantee customer confidence and ensure equitable access to financial services. The reform of this sector is crucial to promote the economic and financial development of the country.

In conclusion, it is imperative that concrete measures be taken to put an end to these abusive practices and promote a more transparent and accessible banking environment for all Congolese citizens.
