In a world where the climate crisis and air pollution are major issues, the 2024 Conference on Climate and Clean Air which opened in Nairobi demonstrates the urgency of acting for the planet. Bringing together 86 states and 83 non-state partners, this event aims to develop strategies to reduce methane and carbon emissions, and thus fight the climate crisis while preserving public health and ecosystems.
This conference highlights the efforts needed to achieve the goal of reducing carbon emissions by 70% by 2030, by leveraging existing technologies and developing sustainable practices. The global commitment to reducing methane emissions is a promising first step, but action at scale is essential to achieve tangible results.
Funding programs to combat air pollution remains a major challenge, with an estimated need of $150 million. Despite the progress made, it is crucial to mobilize more resources to implement effective and sustainable measures. Indeed, air pollution continues to cause more than seven million deaths per year, highlighting the urgency of action to protect the health of populations.
Beyond the technical discussions, this conference offers the opportunity for States to collaborate and implement policies in accordance with the recommendations of the experts. By promoting dialogue and sharing best practices, it contributes to strengthening international cooperation to face current environmental challenges.
At the same time, the alarming situation of cities like Milan, suffocated by air pollution and fine particles, highlights the need for urgent measures and strong political will to protect the health of citizens. Movement restrictions and health recommendations are first responses, but more global and sustainable actions are essential to reverse the trend and preserve the future of the planet.
Together, let’s act for a more sustainable and healthier future for all.
